Imagination Takes Flight at Downtown Victoria Gallery
A World of Birds Reimagined with Found Objects and Familiar Materials
Victoria, BC – This December, Gage Gallery in downtown Victoria will come alive with the spirit of flight as local artist Tanya Bub unveils her latest solo exhibit, BIRDS! Known for her innovative use of upcycled, recycled and everyday materials, Bub’s newest collection promises to captivate and inspire audiences of all ages. The exhibit runs from December 3 to 22, with free admission to this all-welcome, family-friendly show.

“In BIRDS!, I want to demonstrate how ordinary materials can be transformed into something extraordinary,” says Bub. “To remind visitors that creativity isn’t just for artists, and to encourage people to discover new possibilities in the things we see every day.”

A Celebration of Creativity and Local Wildlife
Featuring over 100 unique bird sculptures, BIRDS! draws inspiration from the beloved local avian life that we are privileged to experience in our day-to-day lives in Victoria, BC. From the majestic eagle to the charming quail, each sculpture is crafted with a combination of found objects and familiar household materials like driftwood, chicken wire, and paper. Bub’s innovative techniques breathe life into these every day materials, showing that creativity can turn the mundane into something magical.

“We are so blessed with the diversity and beauty of birds in our city. Many of us see herons, owls and hummingbirds almost on a daily basis. Everyone loves them.” Bub adds. “What better subject to inspire creativity and make us appreciate the glory that surrounds us.”

An Interactive Experience for All Ages
BIRDS! will be a truly immersive experience, transforming Gage Gallery into a vibrant aviary. The birds will fill every corner—perched on walls, soaring from the ceiling, and standing proudly both inside and outside the gallery. Visitors are invited to explore the space and discover new perspectives at every turn. This unconventional exhibit welcomes families with kids of all ages, nature lovers, and curious minds, aiming to inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation for both art and nature.

Connection to the Community through Art
Tanya Bub’s artistic journey continues with BIRDS!, building on her commitment to using art for storytelling, advocacy and accessibility. Known for her thought-provoking projects like Sitting with Grace, which highlighted the stories of Victoria’s unhoused community, and her fundraising efforts for the BC SPCA’s Wild ARC, Bub has consistently used art to spark conversations around empathy, wildlife conservation, and community connection. With BIRDS!, she continues her exploration of transformation—showing how creativity can breathe new life into both the familiar and the overlooked.

“Art is a tool for transformation—whether it’s using recycled materials or exploring new perspectives on familiar subjects,” Bub says. “BIRDS! is an invitation to rediscover the joy of creating by seeing the potential in what’s around you.”
