Haren Vakil was born in Mumbai, India, and holds a degree in Architecture as well as a post-graduate diploma from the Victoria College of Art, Victoria, B.C., Canada.
Haren worked as an architect and urban designer in India and the Netherlands. In 1973, he came to Canada to pursue graduate studies at the University of British Columbia. Since then he has worked as an urban designer with various Vancouver and Victoria firms. He now lives in Victoria and works as a painter, illustrator, and designer. He has exhibited his work in several juried and group shows in local galleries and has had solo exhibitions in Victoria, B.C., and Mumbai, India. A number of his works are in private collections in Canada, the United States, Europe, and India.
My work is rooted in the surreal and the fantastic. It is influenced by my background in architecture, my interest in music, especially jazz, and my experience of various cultures, east, and west. My intent is to produce images that evoke wonder, surprise, and amusement.
