Recently moved to Victoria, Royden can claim to have lived on all three of Canada’s coasts. He grew up on the prairies and graduated from the University of Manitoba School of Art (BFA) and later studied at NSCAD in Halifax. In 2003 he made a career change from art educator to full time artist and maintained his practice in a studio in Ashcroft BC. Work in the studio has been balanced with frequent travels to museums and galleries in Europe and North America (until 2020). This exposure to contemporary and master works has provided ongoing education. There is a too-long list of influential artists from Bernini to Diebenkorn.

His work is a kind of inventive formalism that tries to avoid narrative, but rather offers to provide a conduit for the viewers’ imagination and personal experience.
