HULL, Emily

Born and raised in a small town on the Prairies, Emily developed a creative practice shaped by an abundance of time, open space, and imagination. A dreamer, maker and wizard with scissors, she creates playful works that draw inspiration from everyday life.

Working with cut shapes, Emily collects and cuts images wherever she goes—around campfires, on ferry crossings, and amid the creative chaos of the studio—building an ever-growing archive of images. Her intuitive process embraces speed, spontaneity, and the creative potential of discarded scraps, transforming them into vibrant compositions filled with bold colour, energetic mark-making, and personal storytelling.

Today, this visual language has expanded into ceramics: clay replaces paper and canvas, underglaze washes stand in for acrylic paint and carving tools take the place of scissors. The process balances improvisation with planning, offering a fresh challenge and intuitive extension of her paper & paint practice. Emily creates narrative-driven works that transform everyday observations into vibrant visual stories, celebrating curiosity, play, and our enduring relationship with the natural world.
